Grant Elementary students are participating in a permanent art project for our garden through the North Coast Arts Integration Project. Thank you to Ngan Ho, Sarah Peters, and Harmony Pelren for coordinating this project. Ngan Ho is leading students through the first step of making the 10X10 mosaic tiles. Students are working in groups of 4 to glue small pieces of sea glass, colored tile, and bottle caps onto mesh backing. Ngan will then transfer the mesh onto a wood backing, grout the spaces, and then bring the finished mosaics back to be applied to the garden beds. Students and their teachers have enjoyed the process and found it very therapeutic! Special thanks to Claire Sund for volunteering her time to Grant students!

A Week of Poetry with Dan Levinson

4/3/2019

Fourth grade teacher Sarah Drisko has brought poet Dan Levinson to do a week-long residency with her class for four years.

She wrote about his visit this year:

"Mr. Levinson is a seasoned poet and poetry teacher, and the great thing is that he has everybody writing poetry...and they're pretty impressed with what they are able to do!
Here's an example of a shy, quiet student's poem, written on the second day of our work with Mr. Levinson:

Yes I am brown.
No, I don't get judged.
But I know people who do but I still love the color I am.
I even wish I was darker than brown when I hear my friends get judged by their color.
I wish they didn't care, for I wished everybody loved their color.
For I love the color I am.

As her teacher, I didn't have any idea that she was noticing such things and that she had formed such intense thoughts about them. My observation: poetry helps us all to express strong emotions."

Hip-Hop Writing & Culture In The Classroom

In this video, Zach, samples J.Dilla's instrumental music from Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q3FG9wva1k&t=1656s

Site Art Lead and 6th Grade Teacher, Zach Lehner, also known as rapper, ZigZilla led (2) one-hour arts integration professional development sessions on integrating Hip-Hop Writing into core content. He opened the session with the question “Is there value in incorporating culture in class or is there a place for student culture?” Many teachers agreed that students’ engagement level, classroom climate, critical thinking skills, comprehension, literacy, and information retention increases when student culture is apart of the curriculum.

Zach, recommends pairing/grouping the students, asking them to write 2 bars (4 beats) using one instrumental music for the whole class to write to and then combining each groups’ work to make a complete verse (16 bars minimum).
Take a look at his lesson plan to get started!

Site Art Leads are North Coast Arts Integration teachers who's 18-19 goal is deepen and share their arts practices with others. Stephanie Silvia, our illustrious Site Art Lead from Hoopa Elementary shared a Valentine's day-themed lesson she did with her classes, using oil pastel, watercolor, shape, lines, pattern, and color choice.
We were especially impressed with the Sketch Note instructions she created!
Harmony Pelren, Site Art Lead at Grant Elementary, ALSO did a similar project with her 2nd grade class, folding the paper to explore quadrants.

ArtSpa Pastels- Another Successful Evening of Art Making for Teachers

11/29/2018

Johanna Mauro was the artist instructor for the November 27 ArtSpa focused on oil pastels.  Teachers started by looking closely at the techniques that Vincent Van Gogh used in his paintings.  Layering and principles such as movement and elements of space were noticed.  After seeing several techniques demonstrated by Ms. Mauro, teachers chose a landscape image they wanted to explore and practiced various techniques they wanted to use in their pastel creation.  Finally, teachers chose a background color and created their artwork.  Another successful evening of art making and social interactions for our collaborating teachers!
