Abstract Memory
2nd Grade-April 2021
After Studying the elements of art (Line, shape, value, form, color texture, space) through various projects during the year, learning about abstract artists (Sonja Delauney and Pablo Picasso), students will use a memory from their lives to create a piece of abstract art and then reflect on their work through writing. Students were given another chance to create an abstract piece, while choosing their own medium. They will then compare the two experiences and explore whether they preferred a more structured lesson or creative lesson.
By creating abstract pieces based on their own experiences, students will know and connect the various elements of art to create an abstract piece and be able to reflect on a personal experience through art, as well as decide whether they prefer to have a more structured art lesson or more choice in their materials
Over the course of 5 lessons, students were able to appropriately use a variety of art materials (chalk pastel, oil pastel, and watercolor) to create an abstract piece of work that reflects a personal memory.
Starting with studying and practicing the elements of art throughout the beginning of the year, then learning about abstract art and abstract artists and finally creating their own piece of abstract art with a variety of materials, students will understand that they can learn from practiced artists, brainstorm their ideas with another peer, choose the materials they would like to use, and create a piece of abstract work that represents something meaningful in their lives.
They then wrote about their creative experience and reflected about the experience of creating the abstract art.
