Ohio Teacher of the Year and Emmy Award-winning star of the public television show “Drawing with Mr. J”, Jonathan Juravich will be the keynote speaker.  His television series connects the creation of simple drawings with Social Emotional Learning conversations.

This special two-hour workshop will give participants a small group art-making and discussion opportunity with Jonathan Juravich. The focus of this event is on educator SEL, and the importance of recognizing and celebrating the other educators in our lives. Explore fun, quirky, and meaningful ways to encourage others while taking time to consider what you need as an individual to feel valued.

Daniel Barash-Shadow Puppetry and Social Emotional Learning:
How Shadow Puppetry Can Enhance Student Understanding of SEL’s Core Competencies and Strategies

Shadow puppetry, with its bold shapes, vivid colors, and dramatic movement, is a highly engaging art form that naturally helps students feel safe when learning how to identify emotions and explore healthy SEL tools. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to learn shadow puppetry performance techniques that help students explore and empathize with the emotional life of both characters in literature and the students themselves. See you in the land of shadows!

As a consultant with Focus 5, Inc., a national leader in the field of arts integration, and a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist, Daniel has been helping teachers learn the art form of shadow puppetry for over 20 years. Participants will make a shadow puppet stage and puppets to take with them.

Dr. April Duncan, DSW, LCSW, RPT-S and founder of All About Play, LLC Using Art & Play to Manage Emotions and Behavior
Do you have a child who is struggling with anxiety, depression, anger?Traumatic experiences in early childhood can lead to developmental issues through adolescence and adulthood when left untreated. This workshop will help individuals working in schools recognize the signs of trauma in students, along with fun play strategies to help promote emotional safety in the classroom. Time will be spent addressing vicarious trauma and self-care strategies to assist in self-regulation during stressful situations.

April Duncan, LCSW, RPT obtained her Bachelor’s in Arts & Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia (2006), Masters of Social Work from Saint Louis University (2012) and her Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) from University of Southern California. She has a private practice in St. Louis and is the Co-Owner of St. Louis Play Therapy Institute, which provides play therapy training for educational and mental health professionals

Jonathan Juravich-Creative Explorations of our Hopes and Worries
There is a lot to be worried about, but just as much to be hopeful for. In this session we will explore how to support ourselves, our fellow teachers, and our students through the identification and communication of our hopes and worries. We will learn through conversation, hands-on artmaking, and engagement with picture books that there is power in identifying our emotions and processing experiences together.

Jonathan Juravich is 2018 Ohio Teacher of the Year. Finalist for 2018 National Teacher of the Year. Art Educator. TED Talk Speaker. Host of the Emmy award-winning “Drawing with Mr. J”, and frequent contributor to The Art of Education University
The conference will be held at Humboldt County Office of Education/Sequoia Conference Center
901 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA
