Decimal/ fraction circle art
In this lesson, students use their understanding of fraction/ decimal conversions to create mandala-like artwork. The number line of decimals from 0-1 in thousandths are stretched around a circle creating a "decimal circle". Students decide on the fractions and corresponding decimals they want to use for their design. For example, thirds, fourths and ninths. By locating the thirds around the circle and connecting the endpoints, they create an equilateral triangle. The fourths create a square and ninths a nonagon. Non-terminating decimals are an excellent evaluation point as the location of 0.33 and 0.333... are not the same.
Stars with 5 points or more can be created by connecting each point in the set of fractions with all the other points.
Layering polygons with more sides in the background is best as they occupy more area than polygons with fewer sides as demonstrated in the slides below.
After students know about converting fractions to decimals, have them practice the "Practice Page" so they know how to create all the shapes they may want to use. After that, they can use the decimal circle to create their own artwork using fractions of their choosing. Be sure they use at least one set of fractions with non-terminating decimals to evaluate if they understand the location of these numbers on the number line.
