Introducing Tableaus
Tableaus have been an integral part to my students' understanding of the subject matter. Tableaus engage all students and allow them to act out, without using words, what they are learning in class. I use tableaus regularly with their spelling words, books they are reading, science and social studies. There are endless ways to use tableaus in the classroom. Students are active participants in their learning!
Art Medium Lesson - Pumpkins in Pastels
In the beginning of the school year, students are introduced to pastels. We watch great videos on how to use pastels and learn different elements of art, to include value, shape, size and space. Creating pastel pumpkins is a great way to gear up for Fall. This lesson also paired nicely with a Math lesson in weighing and measuring pumpkins.
Science, Writing, & Art Integrated Lesson
Students in 4th grade learn about energy and how to build circuits. Students also write an opinion piece in English Language Arts. I thought of an arts integrated lesson that would combine all that we were learning in October. Students wrote an opinion piece convincing someone to purchase their spooky dwelling, they then designed and painted their spooky dwelling using the elements of art. Students then used their knowledge of building circuits and created their spooky dwelling, complete with a working circuit, that lit up their masterpiece!
Mixed - A Colorful Story
Students first read the art in the book, Mixed, by Arree Chung. They then created colors of their own by mixing paints. Students incorporated facial expressions in their piece. After listening to the story, students created a tableau in small groups representing a scene from the story. Students then created their own, "Mixed" inspired art.
Visualizing Music
Students learned about the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky. Students listened to the story, The Noisy Paint Box, and learned about synesthesia. Students were then able to create their own abstract art while listening to a music selection of their choice.
Shadow Puppetry
Visiting artist, Haley Davis came to our classroom to lead a ten week program on shadow puppetry. Students learned the origin of shadow puppetry, how to write a story line to go with their shadow puppet, how to design and create a shadow puppet, and then presented a show in front of their peers complete with sound effects and voice overs!
Artists' Portfolios
Students are using Adobe Spark to build their art portfolio. Students are looking at the artwork they created throughout the school year and they are reflecting on their accomplishments, their challenges, as well as the elements of art they focused on with each piece.
